Sanya Kantarovsky's works across media explore an off-modern matrix of painterly citation and pictorial invention. In Proximity II, a new four-color woodcut produced with 10 Grand Press, Kantarovsky continues his project of building narrative from figuration, depicting an isolated, sympathetic subject engaged in an ambiguous activity. A controlled floral pattern in green and black heightens the woodcut technique's manipulation of positive and negative space, pairing a vibrant textile-like plane with a sharper graphic style of illustration. Kantarovky's diverse range of references results in images that are attached to broad histories of painting, literature, and the popular arts but experienced in intimate and humorous episodes.
Kantarovsky was born in 1982 Moscow, Russia, and lives and works in New York. His video installation Happy Soul was included in the 2015 SculptureCenter exhibition The Eccentrics.
