In conjunction with his exhibition at SculptureCenter, Rafael Domenech invites us on a tour of the neighborhood to look at the intersections of the institution, the exhibition, and the surrounding urban environment. The tour considers Long Island City as a case study to think about the conditions of a neighborhood that is currently experiencing a massive rise in generic construction that prioritizes quick yields, leading to rapid gentrification and the deterioration of urban life and activities. The tour is a form of walking conversation that considers how various encounters on its route contribute to our understanding of the impact of the neighborhood’s development, particularly on how we experience, navigate, and situate ourselves in the city.
