Working between video, printmaking, and sculpture, Anastasia Sosunova shapes installations that draw upon shared rituals and mythologies that mobilize community thinking. Her projects address themes related to the coexistence of seemingly incompatible value systems. Over the last few years, she has centered in on the Lithuanian chain Senukai (a DIY retail empire), which leans into the vulnerabilities produced by a precarious national economy, marketing the ideal of self-sufficiency. Negotiating the romantic yet futile promises of hardware stores, Sosunova will build an environment that evokes both the anarchic logic of the hand-built and a moody Eastern European futurism for In Practice. The work emerges from the artist’s research into the contemporary shortage of homebuilding supplies, which has been intensified by the expansion of the defense industries across NATO countries.
