In Practice: Ash Moniz

Ash Moniz is an artist whose work centers on the refusal to appear within artistic and political contexts that often desire personal representation, regardless of its costs. Her In Practice exhibition gives new form to a number of long-term artistic relationships and open-ended international projects made with subjects who cannot (or, for their own safety, choose not to) identify themselves due to their positions within conditions of war, precarious labor, and activism. The resulting works—in sculpture, installation, video, and text—document a compounding absence of representability within Moniz’s broader practice. Her attempt to describe and connect such voids through artworks reflects a tense negotiation of trust, agency, safety, and solidarity that underpins both artistic and political expression in this time.
