Through animation, sculpture, and installation, Jessica Wilson explores the somatic and material effects of virtual systems—rendering unseen forces palpable through light, color, and spatial parameters. Her practice contends with the competing desires to index technical processes and to charge them with emotion, a tension that finds expression in physical sensation. For In Practice, she turns to disused LED taxi tops salvaged from New York City cabs, reviving the onboard advertisements from when she found them as ghostly echoes, while adding new animations that might expose the machine’s inner turmoil—a cartoonish live-feed MRI of processing and transmitting. The work embeds the taxi tops, normally used for targeted ads, with an imagined inner life, turning their components into protagonists of their own dramatic days.
