Nikolas Gambaroff's work deals with modes of display, distribution, authorship, and the painting as cultural object. Gambaroff's paintings are constructed through a process of embedding marks within layers of collaged and torn newsprint and gesso on canvas or panel. Familiar headlines, public figures, movie ads, and luxury merchandise are partially revealed within the collaged layers, collapsing existing structures of text and image. This edition is a first for the artist; a sculptural exploration that furthers his interest in mark-making and is directly inspired by his personal collection of vintage metal pattern stamps. The patina for each on the works in this edition has been applied directly by the artist.

Gambaroff was born in Germany in 1979, and currently lives and works in New York and Los Angeles. He received his MFA from Bard College School of Visual Arts in New York. Included in SculptureCenter's 2010 exhibition Knight's Move, his work has also been exhibited at Schiefe Zähne, Berlin; The Kitchen, New York; The Power Station, Dallas; Kunstlerhaus, Graz; MoMA, New York, Swiss Institute, New York; MCA Chicago; Kunsthalle Zurich, among many others.
