Sam Anderson:

    Time Crisis 4

    Cast resin
    13 x 3.5 x 6 inches (33.02 x 8.89 x 15.24 cm)
    Series of 10 works

Sam Anderson creates compositions with figures and objects that inhabit oddly familiar relationships to the viewer. For Time Crisis 4 (1-10), a series of ten unique works, Anderson represents four stylized figures, sequentially arranged by age from young to old. Each figure pushes a directly older rival down the line, emulating a human life-cycle chart. One attempts to displace their predecessor; inversely, all acquiesce to an inevitable succession, forming an exchange of control and surrender. Each of the ten works is cast in one of five semi-transparent resin colors: Healthy Urine, Pink, Blue, Strawberry, and Faded Green.

For her 2017 solo exhibition at SculptureCenter, Anderson created a series of new sculptures and video that abstracted the town square, casting particular characters in mid-gesture and suspending the action of a community. SculptureCenter also published the artist's first monograph on the occasion of the exhibition, co-produced with Kölnischer Kunstverein and Mousse Publishing.

Sam Anderson was born in Los Angeles in 1982 and lives and works in New York. She has had solo exhibitions with Tanya Leighton, Berlin (2020); Boca Raton Museum of Art, Florida (2019); Chapter NY, New York (2018); JOAN, Los Angeles (2018); and Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne (2017), and other venues.

Acquiring this or other artworks from SculptureCenter helps to support our exhibitions and programs to provide artists space to incubate ideas, experiment with materials, and present works that might have otherwise never been realized.
