Mika Tajima:

    Death in the Afternoon

Thermoformed plastic, enamel paint, PVC, rubber, wood
    Dimensions variable
Series of 30 unique works (currently available in two colors)

Vacuum cast in plastic from hot tub parts and spray-painted in saturated colors, this edition by Mika Tajima (born 1975 in Los Angeles) underlines our relationship to objects of leisure while invoking technologies developed to control and affect the body. The works are related to her ongoing Furniture Art series, the title of which refers to Erik Satie's Furniture Music (Musique d'ameublement), a series of infinitely repetitive compositions intended as background music.

Tajima was included in SculptureCenter's 2010 survey exhibition Knight's Move. Her temporary public art project Meridian (Gold), commissioned as part of SculptureCenter's Public Process program, was on view in Hunter's Point South Park on the Long Island City waterfront in the summer of 2016. Her work has been featured in exhibitions at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2018); Borusan Contemporary, Istanbul (2018); Palais de Tokyo, Paris (2017); the Eleventh Gwangju Biennale, Gwangju (2016); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2013); and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2009).
