    Katrín Sigurdardóttir:

    1 out of 100 parts
    2014

    Cast cotton paper
    35.5 x 36 x 2.5 inches (framed)
    Edition of 12

Katrín Sigurdardóttir’s edition for SculptureCenter is based on her critically acclaimed work Foundation, a large-scale installation comprising a raised ornamental surface, mapping out the floor of a fictional 18th century pavilion. To create the work, nearly 9,000 tiles were produced from handmade molds, following artisanal 18th century techniques. Each mold was used on average six times, producing close to 1,600 unique shapes.

In this edition for SculptureCenter, four molds were utilized to make a cast cotton paper relief of sixteen tiles with shapes can be found within the central pattern of Foundation. This edition depicts one out of one hundred parts of unique shaped tiles that are brought together in Foundation, commemorating the process of the making of the tiles in the artist’s studio in Long Island City during the winter of 2012-2013. In this way, 1 out of 100 parts echoes the inherent serial process of Foundation.

Katrín Sigurdardóttir was born in Reykjavík in 1967. Throughout her career, she has explored the way physical structures and boundaries define our perception of reality. Through unexpected shifts in scale, united with a personal use of architecture, cartography and landscape, her evocative installations oblige us to look at the world surrounding us in a new way. Sigurdardóttir has presented solo exhibitions at The 33rd Sao Paulo Bienal, Brazil (2018); FRONT International Cleveland Triennial of Contemporary Art (2018); The Icelandic Pavilion at the 55th Museum; Arts Center, Boston (2015); MASS MoCA, North Adams (2015); Parasol Unit Foundation for Contemporary Art, London (2015); MIT List Visual Art Center (2015); and SculptureCenter, New York (2013-14), among others.
