Embracing lengthy formats and quotidian content, Reverberations mines an inherent materiality within the ephemeral moments of dance, film, and sound. By stretching out, slowing down, or pausing time-based and performative mediums, this group of artists focuses on the sculptural properties of audio, light, and bodies. Often embracing "unwanted" signals and possible discomfort, these projects elucidate physical and social structures only to disrupt them. The newly commissioned performances in Reverberations were created for SculptureCenter's 2012-2013 In Practice program, and curated by Assistant Curator Kristen Chappa.
Park McArthur and Yve Laris Cohen will create a performance for SculptureCenter's main gallery using the building's pre-existing sonic and structural features.
R. E. H. Gordon will create an installation that investigates how infrastructure can create content and determine possible outcomes. Periodically activated by dance, Gordon's project articulates an in-between gender position through shifting roles of props and objects, while simultaneously investigating how the inclusion of live action affects our understanding of sculptural arrangements.
Combining 8mm film with electronic and acoustic musical instrumentation, Joshua Churchill and Paul Clipson will perform two live collaborations. The artists will present densely layered collages of light and sound that activate the lower level galleries, incorporating chance juxtapositions.
Woody Sullender will present an evolving sonic environment requiring improvisation by both the artist and audience to create new structures and navigate social roles. Sullender will incorporate a variety of plinths and materials from SculptureCenter's galleries, amplifying existing frequencies in an exploration of the architecture and site outside of convention.
SculptureCenter's In Practice program supports the creation and presentation of new work by emerging artists and reflects diverse approaches to contemporary sculpture. Artists are selected through a call for proposals and are provided with an honorarium, production budget, fabrication and installation assistance, as well as invaluable curatorial and administrative support. This year SculptureCenter received over 800 applications from artists worldwide.
Joshua Churchill is a San Francisco-based interdisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses immersive, site-specific sound and light installations, photography, and experimental music/noise. His compositions explore the aesthetic, emotive and structural qualities of the environments in which they occur. Other sound performance and recording projects include T/R and doom/drone trio, Riqis. Churchill has recently exhibited or performed at COCO (Vienna) and Southern Exposure, Eli Ridgway Gallery and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco). He attended the Djerassi Resident Artist Progam in 2011 and will be a resident at AIR Krems in 2013.
Paul Clipson is a San Francisco-based filmmaker who creates Super 8mm films edited in-camera that reveal the rhythms, energy and sensuality of light and movement. Often collaborating on live performance events with sound artists and musicians including Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, Joshua Churchill, Gregg Kowalsky, and Tarentel, Clipson utilizes multiple exposures, dissolves, and macro imagery to foreground unexpected visual forms. Screenings and performances in 2012 include engagements at the Berkeley Art Museum (Berkeley), Centre Pompidou (Paris), Festival Play (Barcelona), and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco).
R. E. H. Gordon is a New York-based artist and writer whose interdisciplinary practice includes sculpture, installation, and performance. Gordon's practice takes interest in ways that communities engage with objects, exploring how they relate to new ways of understanding gender, and the creation of alternative spaces that enable different modes of gendered personhood. Gordon received a MA in Visual and Critical Studies and a MFA in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and has exhibited and performed at The Kitchen (New York), Samson Projects (Boston), and the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago).
Yve Laris Cohen's work has been performed and exhibited at locations including Dance Theater Workshop, Abrons Arts Center, Danspace Project, Thomas Erben Gallery, ICA Philadelphia, and Movement Research at the Judson Church. Laris Cohen was a 2010-2012 Movement Research Artist in Residence, and received the Rema Hort Mann Foundation's Visual Art Grant Award in 2011. He graduated with a BA from the University of California, Berkeley in 2008 and a MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University in 2011.
Park McArthur graduated from Davidson College and the University of Miami. She attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and the Whitney Independent Study Program, where she teaches a seminar on disability studies.
Woody Sullender is a Brooklyn-based artist whose work explores the socio-political aspects of sound in various arenas, including public space, music, and radio. Sullender received his MFA from Bard College and BA from the University of Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has most recently performed at Issue Project Room, the 2011 New York Electronic Art Festival, Harvestworks, and DNK Amsterdam. Sullender frequently collaborates with sound artists Seamus Cater, Kevin Davis, and Sergei Tcherepnin. He has held residencies at Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (New York), STEIM (Amsterdam), and Künstlerhäuser Worpswede.
